What is Valtrex?
Valtrex is a medicine that contains valacyclovir that is used to cure infections with herpes. This antiviral medicine treats varicella zoster that is a causative of shingles and herpes simplex viruses. The viruses cause cold sores and genital herpes. Valtrex can also be used as a preventive care remedy for infections with cytomegalovirus. This virus is risky to patients who have undergone a slid transplant and infants.
How it works
The active substance in the antivirus (valacyclovir) is broken down into two substances, aciclovir and valine (an amino acid) when it is ingested orally. Aciclovir is an enzyme that blocks viruses from the need to produce DNA hence the virus does not multiply. Acyclovir (Zovirax) and famciclovir (Famvir) fall in the same category.
Common side effects
The side effects profile of Valtrex are similar to those of acyclovir. Common lateral effects are:
v Abdominal pain
v Cold symptoms
v Increased liver enzymes and
v Reduction of the white blood cells
Other people experience diarrhea, joint pain, and dizziness. For the elderly, the drug may cause agitation, hallucinations, confusion, seizures, delirium, and encephalopathy, which is a brain disorder.
How to use it
An adult dose of valtrex to handling shingles is 1000mg three times a day for seven days. This dose should start 72 hours after the onset of the rash.
For the first episode genital herpes, the dose of Valtrex is 1000mg in twice daily for ten consecutive days. This dose should begin in 72 hours of the beginning of pointers and preferably within 48 hours for effectiveness.
For treatment recurrent HSV, the dose of 500mg twice a day for three days is effective. When one notices the first indication of the symptoms or recurrence, the dose should be administered.
For prevention of the recurrent strain of genital herpes, the dosage of administered is 100mg once daily as recommended. However, for the people with a recurrent history strain of eight or fewer yearly, the recommendation is 500mg daily to eliminate the threat of spreading the virus to other people.
For Cold sores, the usual dose of Valtrex is 2000mg at the first indication of the symptom the followed later by another 2000mg 12 hours later. This treatment is administered at the initial indication of a cold sore (tingling, burning sensations, and itching).
NOTE: For people with poor kidneys function lower doses are administered.

Valtrex is a drug that can be taken without food. However, if you experience stomach upsets, it is wise to take food before the medicine. If the doctor gives you a dose dissimilar from the ones listed above, it is not wise to change without talking to the doctor first. Another requirement is to make sure you use a lot of water to avoid dehydration.
